Introduction to MITLRA

India is on move and the economy is healthy and stable. With an estimated market of over Rs.8600 crores, the lighting industry is witnessing tremendous growth. In spite of annual growth of about 13 %, nothing much has been done to develop professionals who can further progress with more scientific and innovative approach. On an interaction with ELCOMA – Electrical Lamp & Component Manufacturers’ Association of India, an apex body of lighting manufacturers representing Philips, Osram, Bajaj Electricals, Crompton Greaves, Wipro etc.,it is learnt that since not many Institutes are providing education and research opportunities in this vital field of Lighting, presently they have to contend with the professionals having background of Electrical / Electronics Engineering.

Considering the gap in the demand and supply of lighting professionals, a National Workshop on Vision for Lighting Technology, Education & Research inIndia was organized jointly by the Mumbai State Centre of the Indian Society of Lighting Engineers (ISLE) and MAEER’s  Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT) at MIT Campus, Pune 20 April, 2006 It was well attended by more than 60 participants including top lighting professionals, not only from India but also from USA .Major lighting companies viz. Philips India, Bajaj Electricals, Litex, Wipro etc. represented in the Workshop to discuss about the need of professionals at different levels. Academicians from several Universities were present to discuss the present scenario of education in the field of Lighting and Illumination Engineering in the country. Leading Architects, Interior Designers, and Consultants had the interaction about the need of application oriented professionals.

At the end of the Workshop, it was felt that there is a need to develop professionals of different levels on this important subject by providing appropriate Courses of Study.

Taking a clue from the Workshop and considering an urgent need of developing professionals in this field of Lighting, the visionary Prof.(Dr.) Vishwanath D. Karad, Founder &Executive President of MAEER decided to establish the subject Academy. The first unique Post Graduate Program in Lighting Technology & Management was started in 2007 under the leadership of Dr.Sunil Karad, Executive Director, MAEER’s MIT.
